Direct taxes are taxes that are paid directly to the government by individuals or businesses. These taxes are levied on income, profits, or assets and are paid by the person or entity that owes the tax. Direct taxes are usually progressive, meaning that the tax rate increases as the income or profits of the taxpayer increase.

In most countries, the government collects direct taxes through various means such as income tax, corporate tax, property tax, and inheritance tax. The government uses the revenue generated from direct taxes to fund public services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

Direct taxes are different from indirect taxes, which are taxes that are imposed on goods and services and are usually paid by the consumer. Examples of indirect taxes include sales tax, value-added tax (VAT), and excise tax.
